The Barra Classic is an annual event held on the Daly River in the NT, it attracts fishermen and women from around Australia. It’s not just the fishing they come for, it’s the fun, friendship and lifelong memories they make while they’re here.
This was my first year at the Classic, I’m not much of an angler but I appreciate the excitement when someone catches a fish and the disappointment when that elusive Barra spits the lure 1metre from the boat.
We went out for the afternoon just cruising up the river and had an awesome time watching everyone ‘working’ their lines, whether it was trawling or casting, everyone had a secret spot and a lucky lure they were not willing to share.
The fun didn’t end at the end of the day, there was piles of food to be consumed, prizes handed out to the best or worse events of the day and of course a dress up competition for those who had room to bring fancy dress that began with the letter ‘O’. I’ve never seen such an array of ideas from Olaf to Oompaloompas – it was quite a spectacle. Needless to say, I’ll be back again next year – not as a competitor but definitely an admirer.
