Camping at Hayes Creek in the NT

We try and get away every other weekend – it’s our sanity break and a great way to recharge the batteries before another week in the office.

Last week a friend told us about a blues and rock n roll duo playing at Hayes Creek – a wayside inn on the Stuart Highway about 150km South of Darwin. Not having camped there before we thought it might be a nice easy and quick getaway for 1 night.

I must say that I was very impressed by the escarpment and view from the camp site. There were powered and non powered sites so we chose to set up the furthest away from the Stuart Highway so we didn’t have to listen to the trucks driving past all night. Unfortunately this meant we were downhill from the diesel generator that ran all night, but it wasn’t too bad.

The entertainment was ‘entertaining’ and there was a good feed of pig on the spit for those who were hungry. Don’t expect too much from the bar – if it doesn’t come out of a can – don’t bother asking!

Just a short drive (or you can walk) from the campsite is butterfly gap which is also a popular spot for rock climbers.

Would I camp there again? Absolutely.
